In January 2019 I had the distinct pleasure of attending ACNA’s annual Ice Driving Event in the Austrian Alps at Seefeld Austria. This event sells out very quickly as the maximum number of attendees is 24.
I flew to Munich where I met my fellow participants over dinner on Sunday night at a fine hotel in that city. On Monday we were off by motorcoach to Ingolstadt where instead of the planned factory tour we were instead treated to a visit to Audi Tradition where we had a personal tour of the garages where many historic and vintage Audi vehicles are kept. Le Mans champion Frank Biela thrilled us with his stories of driving many of the cars on display, including one with a certain early illegal “performance enhancement”. I have never seen so many Audi Sport Quattro's in my life!
After some shopping at the Audi Store, we were back on the bus to the Audi Driving Centre in Neuburg for some hot laps in an R8 Performance followed by lunch. We were then back on the bus for what turned out to be a very slow and snow-filled drive to Seefeld.
Nonetheless, we were up early Monday morning to head to the icefield. We then spent the next two days driving Sonoma Green RS5 Coupes under the wonderful instruction of Le Mans winners Frank Biela and Marco Werner, World Rally Championship driver Fredrik Ahlin and others. At mealtime, we all shared our days’ experiences and love of all things Audi.
Too quickly it was all over and I was on my way back home.
Next year’s event is scheduled for January 12-16, 2020. Pictures and a video from the 2019 event and information on the 2020 event can be found here:
